back to Carol Herzer 1970's pastels intro
In 1972 I went on a journey to my ancestral home, Vienna, where my grandfather was born. I studied painting there, and also was introduced to working with pastel on a special paper with a velvet like surface, flocked as it was called. I continued working with this technique for a number of years after I returned to the US. There are landscapes, these pastel paintings were mainly done in Woodstock with trees, clouds, the valley, the woods, some more realistic, some magical and mysterious. This is a large body of work and only some of them are posted here. My subject matter revolved around landscape and the figure, with inner visions and realms being revealed.
I have used a number of them in videos that I made to be found here:
A series that was done during the time of my pregnancy and the birth of my first child is also seen here:
All pieces are approx. 20 x 26 inches unless otherwise noted.

In the fall, and water is falling down the hillside.
Above the Woodstock valley music is making mysterious patterns in the sky.
The trees are forever dancing in an atmosphere of liquid aqua blue.
The promise of spring is in the air.
Early spring's delicate touch.

The light of the new year is shining through the snow and slivery grey clouds.

Fly to the Sun
A bird and a cloud shaped like a bird, a pathway over the mountain to the sun.
The end of summer, dancing with the trees.
Woodstock valley in late winter when clouds shaped like fish sometimes appear.
Close up of the side of Guardian mountain in late summer, a wall of lush green.
Looking down the Woodstock valley from its northwestern corner.
To the left, up in the clouds is a cloud queen, on her throne.
A quiet day with snow.

The beauty of the forest is a true jewel of life.
