Carol Herzer: 1970's Pastels

Pastel paintings magical and visionary, inner worlds and landscapes, themes of pregnancy, birth, children, death and crossing over, the Woodstock valley in different seasons, trees and skies.

All of the pastels shown here were done between 1973 and 1976. They were done with pencil pastels on a special paper that has a flocked surface making it like a stiff velvet that catches the pastel. I was introduced to this kind of paper and the pencil pastels when I was in Austria in 1972. A stiff paintbrush is used to remove excess pigment and additional work is done over that allowing the image to be developed over time. Some of the flocked paper is colored, including pink, blue, and grey tones which show through in the work.
Unless otherwise noted all pieces are approximately the same size, 20 x 26 inches. A few pieces are made with two pages taped together on the back, the only way I could get a larger size.
